Speaking of Psychology: ‘Something Happened in Our Town,’ with Marianne Celano, PhD

"Something Happened In Our Town" is a children’s book about racial injustice from Magination Press, APA’s children's books imprint. The story follows two families — one white, one black — as they discuss the police shooting of a black man in their community. The story aims to answer children's questions about such traumatic events, and to help children identify and counter racial injustice in their own lives.

Dr. Marianne Celano is the director of the Emory University Parent Child Interaction Therapy Program as well as a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Celano co-authored "Something Happened In Our Town" with Marietta Collins, PhD, and Ann Hazzard, PhD, who worked together for more than two decades as Emory University School of Medicine faculty members serving children and families in Atlanta. All three psychologists have been involved in community advocacy efforts focused on children’s behavioral health and social justice.
