(Replay 2.5.2021) Divorce 4 Black Men and A Therapist have a conversation

As of June 2020, the divorce rate between black men and women is 42%, the second-highest rate in America, and the highest among Native Americans at 45%.

The American Psychological Association wrote the following in an April 2020 article: "Marriage and divorce are both common experiences. In Western cultures, more than 90 percent of people marry by age 50. Healthy marriages are good for couples' mental and physical health. They are also good for children; growing up in a happy home protects children from mental, physical, educational, and social problems. However, about 40 to 50 percent of married couples in the United States divorce."

There is so much to unpack regarding the benefit's a good marriage brings mental and physical. I thought it critically important to have a conversation about black men mentally, physically, and spiritually from a marriage that did not work. I am exploring this conversation with Black Men first because Black Men are less likely to seek therapy or find a positive outlet/space to heal after a divorce and or before getting into another relationship.

An August 2020 New York Times article confirms the lack of access to Mental Health services in black communities, maybe because the African-American communities' resources are slim to none. In 2018 the American Psychological Association cited less than 6% of Psychologists were black; I didn't even peek in to see how many are men for fear of a further disparaging number.

Three of my friends, myself, and a very qualified individual, family, and marriage therapist will unpack our experiences in real-time on Friday, February 5th, 2021, at 8 PM. Come join us, and please invite a few friends. Maybe together, we can begin rebuilding the village, healthy community relations, and great marriages because the bottom line, all these things forester healthy children mentally, physically, and socially. I see it as a great way to begin breaking generational curses.
